Charlotte Hardy

Artist Biography:

Since graduating with a first class honours in Printed Textile Design from Manchester Metropolitan University, Charlotte has worked primarily as a painter. Charlottes paintings have been exhibited nationally and published worldwide as prints. Alongside her painting, Charlotte has regularly taken on illustration work for stationary, book covers and editorials. Charlotte is drawn to decoration, pattern and colour in interiors and in the garden. Table top still lives are a favourite theme, often playing with the idea of patterned wallpaper. In contrast to the decoration, there is a sense of simplicity where the subject matter is pared down to its’ most important elements. A sense of space, considered compositions and a general use of flattered perspective give the work a strong design feel. This stems from Charlotte's training in textile design. There is a gentle narrative to the work which has a whimsical quality to it. Initial ideas are tried out in paints in a sketchbook and then developed onto canvas or watercolour paper. Paint is layered upon painted or collaged patterned backgrounds to create depth and texture. The work progresses quickly to try and capture a sense of energy and spontaneity with painterly brushstrokes. Charlotte works in South London in two work spaces – a small room at home and a studio nearby in an old clock factory.
