As an artist, Montague Dawson is particularly associated with the great clipper ships and the 'days of sail' of the late 19th century. However, he was an extremely versatile marine artist and also painted a wonderful collection of pictures on other maritime themes, including the conflict at sea during the Second World War, the pirates of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and a variety of more contemporary yachting scenes. His yachting pictures depicted Americas Cup races, some of the great J-Class challenges of the first half of the 20th century, and more general sailing scenes like this charming subject, A Winning Tack, emphasising the human nature of man’s challenge to the sea as distinct from the majesty of the larger clipper ships which were more generally his subject. Montague Dawson’s yachting paintngs are rare and were therefore much sought after.
