This work represents the later period of Mondrian's life. He produced complex lattice of lines, using black and interspersed with vibrant colours. The style of work is sometimes described as abstract geometric. Often he took months or years to complete a painting and sometimes the viewer can see that the image is almost cartographical in appearance. It is reported that he spent many long hours painting on his own, in total solitude, until his hands blistered and he sometimes cried or made himself sick. On occasions, he used strips of painted paper tape to create the arrangements and to experiment with different designs before starting work on a canvas.
