Gabriel Deschamps made his name as a painter of genre and marine scenes in the South of France, and this view is typical of the paintings which made his reputation. Depicting a typical Mediterranean harbour scene from the 1950s, Little Boats, St Jean, with the blue heat haze of its colours, encapsulates beautifully the warmth of the unspoint Riviera after the Second World War. This view depicts the famous privileged enclave on Cap Ferrat in all its undeveloped glory. The town is located on a peninsula next to Beaulieu-sur-Mer and to Villefranche-sur-Mer and extends out to Cap Ferrat. Cap Ferrat is home to one of the most famous hotels in the world, the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, and the tranquillity and warmth of the climate have attracted residents including Charlie Chaplin, David Niven, Jean Cocteau, Isadora Duncan and Winston Churchill.
