Munnings was employed as war artist to Canadian Cavalry Brigade. He sometimes worked on canvases in the field close to German front lines. Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) was one of the last regiments in a British Imperium to be created and raised by a private individual Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal. The motto of the regiment is perseverance.
