Eccentric, mysterious and artistic, if Thelomious Monk had not been a musician he would have been a painter. He performed his piano compositions with splayed fingers delivering an angular, percussive dissonance that was surprising and a bit of an acquired taste. Not a huge crowd pleaser early on Monk was respected by serious jazz musicians and listeners. Saxophonist Sonny Rollins and drummer Art Blakey, virtuosi themselves, often sat in with Monk. Art for arts sake might have been his motto. He was an inspiration to other artists to ‘Keep it real’.
