Wald-Hexen (Forest Witches) number amongst the most impressive works of Klee`s final years. The thick lines that are so typical of Klee`s late work appear on an olive green background. They form meshes that meander across the entire area of the picture and even seem to intersect with its edges. The image was produced while Klee was in exile after he had fled to Switzerland to escape from Nazi Germany and is a strong work that makes Klee`s overall attitude to art more comprehensible. The balance he spent during this life looking for his colour and touch for something between eerie fragility and just enough decisiveness, was never struck better than in this image.
