Throughout the 1760s, Stubbs produced a wide range of individual and group portraits of horses, on occasions accompanied by hounds. He had aristocratic patrons, who recognised that his work was more accurate than that of earlier horse painters and his career really took-off in 1759, when the Third Duke of Richmond commissioned three large pictures from him and subsequently, several more Dukes and other Lords gave him commissions. These were sufficiently profitable, that he was able to buy a house in Marylebone which was then a fashionable part of London and where he lived for the rest of his life. The romantic pastoral scene, evoking the love of the British people for horses, was as popular then as it is today.
